DevOps Engineer

Vancouver, BC

Job Description

If you have a passion for setting up infrastructure as code,  tweaking deployments to improve speed and uptime and love working in a team, we want to work with you. We want you to play an active part on our IT / DevOps Team at a niche and nimble SaaS company.

Specifically, you will be responsible to:

  • Own the infrastructure and services - from provisioning new servers, updating AMIs with latest security patches and re-deploying infrastructure,  writing and maintaining configuration management scripts, to building automated health monitoring and troubleshooting problems.
  • Ensure local development environments for the development team are easily deployable, multi-application micro-services capable, and utilize the same configuration as production environments by using docker and related docker resources.
  • Continuously improve and automate deployments and proactive monitoring of infrastructure and software
  • Debug and solve complex problems in our production, staging, and dev environments.
  • Actively participate in meetings with the product development team.
  • Perform effectively to tight deadlines, working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team with varying skills and knowledge.
  • Present technical matters to non-technical people

Desired Skills & Experience

Of course, we want the usual skill set: efficient, organized, follow through on commitments. You’re intelligent, have great analytical skills and pay attention to detail. In addition, you’re calm under pressure, have a great work ethic and communicate well.

But more than the usual skills, we want you to push and not accept the mundane. Push yourself to grow into a lead DevOps role, take part in the DevOps community, and add additional skills in development and database knowledge.  Push for a higher standard. Be open to new ideas and personal feedback. Try stuff, fail, and learn from it.

Come to us with:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Minimum 1 year of DevOps experience
  • Experience with Linux: Ubuntu or AWS AMI. Be comfortable using the command line, vi, and multi-window multi-monitor at a quick pace.
  • Experience with provisioning using Chef, CloudFormation, Ansible, Puppet or similar tools.
  • An excellent grasp of a programming language - we mostly use Ruby, but we have experience in a range of languages as well.
  • Excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills – you have a passion for root cause analysis and problem resolution.
  • Keen interest in reliable architectures and automating infrastructure.
  • Solid understanding of SQL and database query languages.
  • The ability to work on a flexible schedule, working Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday, and being on call for emergencies.
  • Passion

We started out with four guys in a basement out of a small town called Abbotsford, BC (Western Canada, right above the US border). In 2013, we moved to Vancouver, BC's Gastown area. We now have offices in Vancouver (Canada/HQ), Napa (USA) and Adelaide (Australia).
